Food Covers Keep Out Flies and Other Insects

Food Covers Come in Handy for Picnics and Camping

Loaned for the exhibit by Addeane Caelleigh, private collection, Charlottesville, Virginia.

Food covers or food tents are used to protect food at outdoor buffets and picnics from flies and other insects. The decorative food cover to the left, made of metal with raffia decorations, was probably made in the 1940s.

Umbrella-style covers are common and inexpensive. Plain ones are sold as camping equipment; decorative versions, like the modern collapsible cover shown below, are used at home for outdoor meals.
