Raising Money Through Christmas Seals to Treat Tuberculosis

Virginia Tuberculosis Society Issues Christmas Seals to Promote Hand Washing

“Wash germs away,” Virginia Tuberculosis Society, Christmas Seals Campaign, 1965. Historical Collections & Services, Claude Moore Health Sciences Library, University of Virginia.

The Virginia Tuberculosis Society issued “ Wash germs away” in 1965 as part of its Christmas Seal Campaign. This hand washing campaign was part of a national and international movement that began in the early 1900s to fight tuberculosis.

Since 1907, the American Lung Association (then called the National Association for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis) has sold colorful, specially designed Christmas seals each year, which people add to the envelopes of their holiday cards.
